Why You Might Need Acetylcysteine

What Is Acetylcysteine?

Acetylcysteine, otherwise known as N-acetylcysteine; N-acetyl-L-cysteine; NALC; NAC, is a supplement form of cysteine which is a semi essential amino acid. The reason it’s semi essential is because your body can make it but needs both serine and methionine. Just like cysteine, acetylcysteine bonds to glutamine and glycine to form glutathione, which is a powerful antioxidant. This antioxidant is anti-inflammatory, helps with immune modulation, and works well with glutathione by increasing synthesis of glutathione in the liver. In fact, one of its most important jobs is helping your body replenish glutathione stores.

When used in IV therapy, according to the FDA, Acetylcysteine likely protects the liver through maintaining and restoring these glutathione levels. Glutathione is so important because it is involved in many body processes such as tissue building, tissue repair, making proteins and chemicals the body needs, and aids in immune function.

What This Does For Your Body

Gut Microbiome Support

Acetylcysteine might be a treatment for glucose metabolic disturbances. This works by reshaping the gut microbiota’s structure.  Treatment with acetylcysteine is shown to reverse glucose intolerance. “Noticeably, (acetylcysteine) promoted the growth of beneficial bacteria (i.e. Akkermansia, Bifidobacterium, Lactobacillus and Allobaculum) and decreased populations of diabetes-related genera, including Desulfovibrio and Blautia” (see this study for more).

Respiratory Support

Supplementing with acetylcysteine can help those with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease by managing lung decline and improving symptoms.

Immune System Support

Emerging research suggests that glutathione supports a healthy immune system. Test-tube studies show that it stops the flu virus from replicating, which reduces symptoms and duration.

Liver & Kidney Restoration

Acetylcysteine assists in the detoxification of your kidneys and liver. It helps prevent potential side effects of drugs like acetaminophen, as well as environmental factors like exposure to heavy metals impacting the liver and kidneys.

Anti Inflammatory & Oxidative Stress

Acetylcysteine monitors anti-inflammatory responses by monitoring the synthesis of inflammatory cytokines. It will also minimise oxidative stress by scavenging free radicals, thus restoring cell viability.
